In the USA, Breast Augmentation surgery (Breast enlargement) is the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure with over 250,000 operations performed last year. The choices for women were either traditional silicone or saline implants. Until now…
The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has recently approved a new breast implant, the Form Stable Implant.
Form Stable Implants are designed to mimic the natural shape of the breast with more volume at the bottom of the implant, and tapered at the top. To maintain this shape, the silicone gel in the implant is firmer than the silicone used in traditional implants. The consistency of the gel inside the implant is thicker and maintains its shape; hence these implants have been called “Gummy Bear Implants”.
Form Stable Implants provide another option for women seeking breast enlargement. As with all devices these implants have advantages and disadvantages. The risks and benefits should be discussed in detail with your surgeon as Form Stable Implants will not suit every woman.
One of the key benefits of Form Stable Implants is that they closely mimic the natural breast shape (more volume at the bottom of the breast). This will not suit someone wanting a full cleavage. Because the implants are comprised of firmer gel, there is also less incidence of wrinkling. The implants are textured and may benefit women at risk of capsular contracture.
Some disadvantages include that a larger incision is required to insert the firmer implants. If the implant rotates the shape can look distorted. Some women also believe the shape looks unnatural when lying down, and they prefer the feel of a softer, more natural feeling implant.
Form Stable Implants offer another choice to women wanting breast enlargement. Always consult an experienced, specialist plastic surgeon.
