The Influence of Large Breasts

One of the most commonly requested and most predictably successful Plastic Surgery procedures is a Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammaplasty)

The medical term for large breasts is macromastia.  The symptoms can include:

  • Chronic neck pain
  • Back and shoulder pain
  • Chest wall pain
  • Headaches, migraines
  • Poor posture
  • Shoulder grooving
  • Tingling in the hands
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Skin rashes under the breasts
  • Low exercise tolerance leading to weight gain.

Can weight loss help?  Weight loss has been repeatedly shown not to be effective treatment for symptoms related to heavy breasts.  That is why liposuction alone will not work.  It is all about gravity.  The position of drooping breasts and the volume of skin contribute significantly to the symptoms.  A good bra will help to some degree.

There have been numerous medical studies documenting the benefits of Breast Reduction surgery.  Including pain relief, improved posture, improved lung function, improved quality of sleep, reduced headaches and improved breast tissue visualization on mammagram.  Patient satisfaction rates after this surgery are very high.

Dr Jane Paterson is a specialist breast plastic surgeon who has many years of experience in performing Breast Reduction surgery and is an expert in short scar breast reduction techniques.  Dr Paterson utilises the Le Jour technique to minimise scarring.

The operation is always performed in an accredited hospital under a full General Anaesthetic.  Most patients stay over night, however for small reductions, some patients choose to go home on the same day.

For most patients, they will require 2-3 weeks off work depending on their level of physical activity.  Keep in mind this is a once in a lifetime procedure that will everyday for the rest of your life improve your overall health and wellbeing.

Your breasts will look more in proportion, feel firmer and your nipples will be lifted back to a more youthful position.

Interestingly, many women who have had a Breast Reduction comment that they wish that they had gone ahead and had the procedure many years before.
