How to choose your plastic surgeon

No decision to undergo surgery should be taken lightly so choosing the right plastic surgeon for you is a vital first step. A great indicator as to whether a surgeon is right for you is whether you feel comfortable discussing your needs with them. A doctor-patient relationship is fundamentally built on trust and Dr Paterson strives to make you feel as comfortable as possible when discussing your needs or concerns.

With so many plastic and cosmetic surgeons to choose from, it’s essential to know the difference between them and what to look for when finding the right one for you.

While both plastic and cosmetic surgeons focus on improving a patient’s body, the education and training the different surgeons have had vastly differs and as such, the outcomes and results also vary. In Australia, all doctors receive an MBBS (Medical Bachelor, Bachelor of Surgery) upon completion of their medical degree. Plastic surgeons must then complete a minimum of 12 years of extensive training to earn a fellowship of The Royal Australian College of Surgery. A cosmetic surgeon, however, can come from any medical speciality or no speciality at all with no additional surgical training beyond the very basic training every medical student receives.

If you are considering having plastic surgery, it’s essential to know if your surgeon is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons FRACS and a specialist Plastic Surgeon as only qualified and recognised surgeons have these credentials.

Dr Paterson is a fully trained and experienced Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and a member of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).

This is why in-depth research is important when selecting your surgeon. If you are unsure, it’s recommended you have multiple consultations with different surgeons until you feel comfortable with one.
