Facial wrinkles form in our skin when we use our underlying muscles to form facial expressions.
For example, when we smile, the lines around our eyes become prominent, and when we frown the vertical line between our eyebrows becomes noticeable. As we age, and as we repeat these muscle movements these lines become more permanent and are eventually present even when the muscles are relaxed. This process occurs because natural substances such as collagen structural protein in the skin), elastin (protein that assists skin to stretch) and hyaluronic acid (gives skin volume), decrease with age. Together with these factors, environmental factors such as exposure to sunlight, smoking and stress, also contribute to the creation of wrinkles and folds in the skin.
How do anti-wrinkle injection treatments work?
Anti-wrinkle injections (AWI) involve a natural, purified protein that relaxes specific facial muscles. When the muscle is relaxed you cannot contract the muscle as hard as before and therefore the lines gradually smooth. New lines are also prevented from forming. The dose is controlled and administered into select facial muscles by a trained professional using a very fine needle. The treatment takes approximately 10 minutes.
The treatment takes 2 – 3 days to begin to take effect with full effect seen at 10 – 14 days. The dose recommended for your treatment will depend on your individual situation and the severity of your lines. Your professional will discuss with you the beneficial dose, and the appropriate areas to treat, to best achieve your desired results.
How long does it last?
The effects can last up to 4 months before lines slowly begin to return.
Does wrinkle relaxation treatment cause more wrinkles to form?
No. If you choose not to have further treatments, your muscles will eventually return to how they worked before the treatment took place.
